Israel and Lebanon have agreed to launch direct negotiations after talks today in Washington DC, according to the United States, whose representatives also attended the meeting. US state department deputy spokesman Tommy Pigott says in a statemennt the meeting between the countries' ambassadors and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was "historic", adding the US hopes the new engagement will lead to a long term peace deal brokered by the US.
