Public punishments have risen sharply under the Taliban

BBC Afghan Languages After returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban resumed the public implementation of corporal punishments. The number of public punishments rose sharply after 13 November 2022, when Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada instructed the group’s judicial institutions to review defendants’ cases “carefully” and implement Islamic punishments against them. In all of these cases, flogging was part of the sentence, and some of those convicted were also sentenced to imprisonment.
